When do you need to call a plumber? Naturally, that depends somewhat on your own proficiency with a wrench. Small jobs such as a clogged drain or toilet or a leaky faucet may be things that you can handle on your own. But you need to be careful because they also may be signs of something more serious. When should you call a plumber? Here are a few times when you need to pick up the phone.

When will you know it’s time to call a plumber?

  1. Low water pressure

    .

If you are experiencing this problem throughout your entire house, it is definitely time to call a plumber. There could be a number of causes for this problem, ranging from an obstruction somewhere in the system, to problems at the source, to a poor design. A good plumber will be able to find the problem.

  1. Lack of hot water.

This is a problem for a plumber. You could have a bad heating element in the water tank, or a problem with a circuit breaker or fuse, or possibly something wrong with the thermostat or overload switch.

  1. Sewer line clogs.

You may have a severe clog in the line – perhaps something such as tree roots – that requires the services of a plumber.

  1. Frozen pipes.

Depending on the situation, a plumber may be needed. If the pipes are frozen, and you want to take a stab at fixing the problem yourself, make sure you turn off the water to the entire house first and also open a nearby faucet. Check to make sure that the pipe has not burst or cracked.

If it has, you need to contact professional help. If not, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun on the pipe. Some might also want to try a propane torch. But be careful when using this device that you don’t ignite something you shouldn’t.

  1. Running toilet.

This could lead to very expensive water bills if not taken care of. This is a repair job that you may want to try yourself. Toilet repair kits available at the hardware store work for most types of toilets and are relatively easy to put in.

But if you have replaced the entire mechanism and still have a leak, it may be time to call in a plumber.
